A pub has thrown its weight behind the England football team for this year’s Euro tournament by changing its name.

Ahead of the Uefa competition, which starts in France on June 10, the Black Lion pub in Epping High Street has changed its name to the more patriotic The Three Lions.

With a sign featuring centre-forward Wayne Rooney, defender Gary Cahill and goalkeeper Joe Hart, the pub will keep its new name until the end of the tournament.

Organised by Carlsberg, the official beer of the England team, the change will also see customised Three Lions glasses and other decorations in the pub.

Owner Alan Willis runs the pub with his daughter and landlady Laura Willis.

Mr Willis said: “It is a big sign that we are supporting the team, and it will get people through to the bar.”

Asked about the team’s chances, Mr Willis did not want to commit but said he thought there was “a 70 per cent chance” of England reaching the semi-finals.
