PUPILS at three schools in Woodford could be breathing in cleaner air over the coming years, as a result of increased funding from the Mayor of London.

Sixteen schools across Redbridge, including Woodbridge High School in Woodford Green and Churchfields Infant and Junior Schools in South Woodford, are set to benefit from a £102,000 grant from the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund.

The project will be used alongside other council reserves to educate pupils and parents about sustainable transport methods, build greener infrastructure and cut down on pollution.

Initiatives will be tailored to suit different schools’ needs and activities will include interactive assemblies, classroom workshops and outdoor awareness projects.

Redbridge cabinet member for environment and sustainability, Cllr John Howard said: “Everyone has a responsibility to reduce pollution and improve air quality, and this project is just one of the ways to help do just that.

“We’ve already installed green walls at two schools in the borough and as well as tree planting project, this will help build on that work and tackle the main source of pollution in Redbridge – traffic.”

Pollution has been a hot topic in Redbridge, with Charlie Brown’s Roundabout in South Woodford recently identified as being four times as polluted as Oxford Circus in central London.

The proposed funding will be discussed at a health, social care and civic pride committee meeting next month.
