A petition has been launched, calling for half of a proposed development in Walthamstow to be made available as affordable housing.

The petition, started by resident Paul Ingram, is urging for 50 per cent of the potential redevelopment of The Standard music venue site to be designated as affordable housing.

Addressed to Waltham Forest council leader, Chris Robins, the petition calls developers TFC Supermarkets to provide “genuinely affordable” properties on the site.

It reads: “Sadiq Khan was recently elected London mayor in a campaign in which the biggest issue was housing.

“His flagship policy was that 50 per cent of new housing will be genuinely affordable.

“That means linked to local incomes not to the local market, and well below the current official definition of affordable.”

Developers’ plans could see a new music venue, a supermarket and around 50 flats built on the site, opposite Blackhorse Road tube station.

The planned development would be between four and seven stories in height and include a communal garden.

A consultation event was held for residents to discuss plans with developers at Gnome House this week.
