Volunteers have stepped in to save a community garden which failed to raise enough money to open in time.
The Restore Community Centre, in Debden, had hoped to raise £5,000 by Monday – but only managed to get £3,900 of its goal to transform the derelict site in Pyrles Lane.
But despite failing to reach its Crowdfunding goal, it will be opened on July 24 as volunteers have come forward to make up the shortfall.
They will offer their equipment and time to clear the abandoned site, which is currently covered in brambles and litter.
Heidi Chow, project volunteer, said: “We’re really grateful for every single donation that’s been given and every offer of help.
“We’ve had a really amazing amount of support and even though we haven’t reached our target, we’re so grateful for what we’ve got as we’ve raised a phenomenal amount for a fantastic community project.
“We have big dreams for the community garden and over time we‘d love to have training sessions, including for those with disabilities or additional needs, cooking workshops, youth engagement and much more.”
The garden will be open to the public from 1pm on July 24, when you can bring a picnic before the launch at 2.30pm.
