Neighbours have called for more CCTV cameras to tackle flytippers on an estate.

Donna Brown, chairman of the Ninefields Residents Panel, believes they would act as a deterrent to the regular problem on the estate.

The 45-year-old, of Badburgham Court, has been left frustrated after a table, some chairs and some cardboard were dumped in Mallion Court.

She said: “I hear from our community all the time about fridges, sofas and general household waste being thrown onto paths, parks and alleyways.

“The estate has a poor reputation and we potentially have a big redevelopment happening in the next couple of years which would improve the area, but if things don’t change with the rubbish, no-one will come it when built.”

“I think the estate needs more CCTV to identify those responsible, whether they are residents or contractors.

“There can be a problem of people driving into our estate, dumping a fridge or piles or wood before driving away.”

Mrs Brown also urged people living in the neighbourhood to report flytippers.

She added: “I often ask residents to report those they know who dump their rubbish, but it’s hard.

“We’ve tried to encourage people to accept responsibility for the rubbish.

An Epping Forest District Council spokesman said CCTV cameras may not be to everyone’s taste.

They said: “Flytipping is anti-social and very frustrating. It costs thousands of pounds in taxpayers’ money to clear up, and seems even more pointless when there is a nearby recycling centre.

“There is a national public debate ongoing about getting the right balance with CCTV – some people want more and some want less.

“There is a cost involved which falls on the taxpayer. Our CCTV network tries to strike the right balance.”

The council does offer a special collection service for any bulky household items for a small fee and issued a warning to flytippers.

The spokesman added: “A new fixed penalty notice of £200 has recently been introduced for flytipping.

“We will certainly look at issuing a fixed penalty or prosecution if we can establish who has dumped waste in this area.

“We will be round to clear it up but not before we have gone through it carefully to find any evidence of who dumped it.”
