Waltham Forest has backed Remain in the EU referendum with 64,156 (59%) people voting to stay.

Brexit backers totalled 44,395 in the borough which saw 108,689 take to the polls and a 66.7 per cent turnout.

The turnout was larger than the 62.1 per cent achieved by Walthamstow in the 2015 General Election.

There was confusion earlier in the night when the turnout was stated as 54.9% before postal votes were counted, leading to Stella Creasy MP to say “it was sad that not more people turned out”.

Speaking after the announcement at 3.45am and before Leave took an unassailable lead, Labour’s MP for Walthamstow, Stella Creasy, expressed her concern for a “divided” Britain.

She said: “I am pleased Waltham Forest has voted remain.

"We have to recognise that Britain is very divided on this issue. It’s divided not just geographically but generationally and by different social groups as well.

"All of us, whatever that final result is, owe it to the people we represent and care about and answer the questions of what happens next.

"It’s very clear that Britain is going to be changed by the results of tonight.

"This is going to be a very different Britain and we owe it to people to set out what that will look like and what their place in it is.

"For those that believe that not just internationally, but nationally and locally, we are stronger when we work with each other, the division we are seeing tonight is also something we must address.

"There is no hiding from that."
