An MP has said he is “disappointed” and “worried about the consequences for our nation” after the UK voted to leave the European Union today.

After the final result was announced this morning (Friday, June 24), MP for Ilford North Wes Streeting and thousands of Stronger in Europe campaigners across the country were faced with defeat.

Redbridge was one of the last local authority areas to announce their vote at around 6am, with 54 per cent of people in the borough voting to remain and 46 per cent backing leave.

Streeting said: “Redbridge voted to remain in the European Union, but Britain has voted to leave the European Union.

“Having campaigned hard to keep Britain in the EU, I am naturally disappointed at this result and I am worried about the consequences for our nation.

“But my job as your MP is to respect the result and do my utmost to make it work for our country.”

The turnout for the vote across Redbridge (67.6 per cent) was higher than the number of people who came out to vote in the general election last year (65.1 per cent).

Although he promised to respect the decision, Streeting took to Twitter this morning warning Prime Minister David Cameron to think carefully before invoking the necessary legislation required to start the withdrawal process.

He claimed that invoking Article 50 immediately would be “reckless and irresponsible”.

The MP also urged senior politicians for “clear leadership” after the historic decision, and in light of the Prime Minister announcing his resignation this morning.

He added: “We now need for people to work together across the political divide to address the big questions that face our country as we chart a new course in the world.”
