A time capsule was buried and a commemorative window unveiled at a school’s centenary celebration.

Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing visited The Daiglen School in Buckhurst Hill on Friday (June 24), as part of a year of centenary events.

Mrs Laing buried the time capsule, which contains essays from some of the children detailing how they see life in 25 years time.

It also contains a memory stick of pictures and a recording of the school choir.

Mrs Laing said: “I was honoured to be involved in the centenary celebrations at Daiglen School.

“I am most impressed by the beautiful window which has been designed by the pupils and reflects the environment and the school motto.

“The time capsule is a brilliant idea and year six children told me their own plans about what they hope to be doing in 25 years.

“I have every confidence that many of them will come back to the school having achieved their ambitions and to remind themselves of what they said in their essays.”

Other centenary events have included an open day, when the special guest was Mr Heap, son of the school's first headmaster.

Visitors also included former students from the 1930s to 1990s.

As part of the event, the school choir sang songs from each of the decades the school has been open.

Headmistress Mary Bradfield said: “The whole year has been very exciting, looking at not just how the school has changed but how the world has changed over 100 years.”

Mrs Laing also judged a year six poetry and reading competition, presenting the reading cup to Reuben Schwartz, 11, and the poetry cup to Tibet Hanedan, 11.

She said: “It was a pleasure to hear every single one of the children.

“Everyone was good enough to win a cup.

“Everyone was brilliant - absolutely terrific.”
