House prices in Waltham Forest have more than doubled in the past seven years, according to a new report.

A new study, carried out by campaign group Generation Rent on behalf of Waltham Forest council, found an average home in the borough now costs around £430,000.

The report also found one in three people in Waltham Forest are private renters, higher than the London average of one in four.

Generation Rent cited high house prices and long waiting lists for council homes as reasons for the large numbers of private tenants in the borough.

The report said: “As is the case across London, most private renters in Waltham Forest have little choice over their tenure because their access to other housing is limited.

“According to the most recently available data, average house prices in Waltham Forest are 8.73 the times of local salaries, while the waiting list for council housing stands at 21,864 people.”

The report also criticised the council’s website, which it claimed needed to provide easier ways for private renters to report problems about their landlords or conditions at their home.

It stated there was little information for tenants wanting to make a complaint and only offered a generic email address to those wanting to lodge complaints.
