A PREGNANT mother has hit out at dangerous drivers after a speeding motorist left her “fearing for her and her baby’s life”.

Holly Hardy, 36, says she wants to raise awareness of the risks posed by irresponsible motorists, claiming a speeding van driver put her and her one-year-old son’s life in “serious danger” last week.

Mrs Hardy, of Chigwell, was on her way home from a friend’s house last Monday afternoon (July 4) when she approached the traffic lights in Broadmead Road, Woodford Green.

As the lights turned green at the St Barnabas Road junction, she carried on driving, but was left “shocked and stunned” when a van ran a red light to cut in front of her.

She said: “We were on our way home from a birthday party and my one-year-old was fast asleep in the back of the car.

“Then suddenly this van came speeding from our left, jumping the red light and a pedestrian crossing and nearly crashed into me.

“He showed absolutely no sign of stopping.

“This was around lunchtime on a Monday, right by Woodbridge School and a nearby nursery. I went to that school and know full well there could have been kids at that pedestrian crossing he cut through.”

After Mrs Hardy’s in-car camera captured the van speeding along the rest of Broadmead Road and finally stopping for the lights at the Chigwell Road junction, she noticed he was also on his phone.

She said: “He was on his mobile as well, I couldn’t believe it.

“If a child had been crossing at the green man he cut across, they would have had no chance.

“I don’t scare that easily but I was badly shaken and upset – he could have put mine, my baby and my unborn baby’s life at risk.”

When she got home, Mrs Hardy called the company to complain about the driver and reported him to the police.

After a conversation with the general manager, the mother-of-one claims she was told the driver had not been going very fast so there was no real threat to life.

She said: “They claim he wasn’t going that fast, but his speed is irrelevant really given that he’s jumped a red light, pedestrian crossing, and been on his phone.

“It’s disgusting behaviour – I can’t believe they’re still letting him back on the road.

“I want to raise awareness of this kind of thing. It’s made me really concerned for public safety, because it goes to show how easily terrible accidents can happen.

“Luckily we have cameras installed in our cars so I could film everything. I would urge others to do the same so if god forbid they do find themselves in the same situation, you have that evidence to protect you.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said Mrs Hardy’s complaint was logged on Tuesday, July 5, and they are awaiting her dangerous driving complaints form at her local police station.

A spokesman for the van driver's company, Dyno, said: “Safety is our number one priority and we take this incident very seriously.

“We are currently investigating this incident and will take appropriate action once this  is complete.”
