A STRUGGLING hospital trust is asking people how they think it can improve care for dying patients.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals Trust (BHRUT) is looking for feedback on its draft end of life care strategy, which aims to ensure all its patients are as comfortable as possible before they die.

Although King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford are both still in special measures, BHRUT’s end of life care was given ‘good’ in its last inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in 2015.

The trust’s palliative care team joined up with local partners to create an end of life care committee who work as hard as possible to carry out the final wishes of the 2,500 people that die across the two hospitals every year.

BHRUT chief nurse Kathryn Halford said: “We’ve made huge strides forward in recent years and now we need a clear strategy to help us continue our journey towards excellent care for every patient and their loved ones at the end of life.

“We’ve shared the strategy with our staff for their views, and it’s important that local people get involved too, so we can ensure our priorities match what is really important to them.”
