Visitors to the Leytonstone Big Weekender next month will be able to get a check-up on their lung health as part of a new interactive exhibition.

The exhibit, organised by the Healthy Lungs for Life campaign, is built in the shape of a giant bubble and will be at the community event on Sunday, September 4.

The bubble will offer residents free lung function testing and an interactive game where they can learn about clean air and how to protect the lungs.

Waltham Forest council deputy leader, Cllr Clyde Loakes, said: “It is great to see this important exhibit come to the borough so that residents can find out more about the importance lung health and what they can do to protect themselves.

“Poor air quality is a major concern in Waltham Forest, and the Council is doing all it can to reduce pollution across the borough.”

A study by University College London (UCL), carried out last summer, found air pollution levels across Waltham Forest were exceeding legal EU limits.

Levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in Walthamstow were recorded at almost twice the legal limit.

NO2, which is produced by vehicle emissions, inflames the lungs when inhaled and can be a contributing factor in conditions such as asthma and lung cancer.

Government research suggests around 23,500 die prematurely each year from conditions linked to the pollutant.

The bubble will be on show for the first time in Trafalgar Square on 2 and 3 September, before moving on to the Leytonstone Get Together.

Visitors will be able to learn more about the steps they can take individually to improve the quality of the air they breathe at work, home and during exercise.

This year’s Leytonstone Get Together will also feature live music line-up, arts and crafts and delicious food and drink.
