SPEED BUMPS are still set to go ahead on a busy road after the council deals with some unexpected problems.

The traffic calming measures on The Avenue, in Highams Park, were expected to go forward this week but the council has delayed their introduction.

Speed bumps will work alongside the council’s plan, consulted in September last year, to introduce a 20 mph speed limit in The Avenue and all residential roads across the borough.

Currently, the 275 bus travels through The Avenue, past the Hale End Library, along its Walthamstow to Woodford route.

Deputy council leader and cabinet member for environment, Clyde Loakes, hoped to reassure residents expecting the traffic calming measures.

He said: “The introduction of the supporting traffic calming measures have subsequently been delayed by some issues that have arisen on the carriageway, which were not evident during the initial outline design stages.

“In order to correct these we will be carrying out reconstruction and resurfacing work on the carriageway, and once this has been completed the speed humps will be installed.

“We are currently working on a definite timeframe for delivering these works, and a letter will be delivered to all households affected once this has been confirmed.”

Conservative cllr Sheree Rackham, of Highams Park ward, couldn’t believe they didn’t foresee the problems.

She said: “How can they not pick these things up?

“They must do a proper consultation of the work before they plan these measures.

“I hope it’s not going to end up costing us more money.”
