THE FIGHT to save an elderly woman’s dogs from the hands of the council has taken its next step with hundreds signing an online petition.

Sheila Herbert, 70, from Highams Park, was given 49 days to remove three of her four dogs last week despite decades of responsible ownership.

Mrs Herbert, a retired NHS worker, has given a home to unwanted cats and dogs for more than 35 years while living in council flats.

Since the Guardian’s first report, hundreds have now taken to change.org to sign an online petition in support.

Conservative cllr Sheree Rackham, of Highams Park ward, started the petition against the council on Wednesday (August 24) and it is fast approaching 200 signatures only two days later.

Mrs Herbert couldn’t believe it when the council delivered a notice to remove her dogs after living in her flat in Oak Hill Court for 16 years without complaint.

She said: “My stomach is turning upside down.

“I’ve been sitting here crying all day.”

Commenting on the online petition, John Moss, said the council was being “heartless” in its treatment of Mrs Herbert.

He said: “The council has allowed Sheila and her dogs to live in her flat for 16 years.

“You can't just turn up after that length of time and demand they are removed.”

Linda Cox called it an “absolute disgrace and very cruel” for the council to target an elderly lady.

She added: “Those rescue dogs are her entire life, and reason for getting up in the morning.

“How about the council concentrate on the many other things in the borough that are neglected instead.”

The council has insisted it is “sympathetic” with Mrs Herbert and is currently investigating an incident, which will have to be concluded before it makes a final decision.
