A homecoming party took place to welcome an Olympic silver medallist back to his town.

Lutalo Muhammad, who won a medal for Team Great Britain in the Men’s 80kg Taekwondo in the Rio Olympics, was welcomed home to Walthamstow at weekly festival Night Feast.

The 25-year-old, who was born and raised in the borough, gave a speech about his achievements and judged a children’s art competition.

Organiser of Night Feast, Chris Evans, said there was a great atmosphere and community spirit at the event in Walthamstow Town Square on Friday, August 26.

He said: “It was absolutely amazing.

“People were pumped up throughout the night and Lutalo’s family were seeing him for the first time since the Olympics.

“It was incredible to see.”

Solo artist Pinkz Perez also performed at the festival.

Earlier in the day, Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy took a video of herself performing taekwondo moves ahead of Lutalo's arrival.

Ms Creasy, who helped organise the event, said the children were inspired by the Walthamstow athlete’s achievements.

She said: “It was brilliant to see Lutalo's reaction to the love and pride that hundreds of

Walthamstow residents showed him at our Olympic Homecoming Party at the Night Feast.

“It was wonderful to see so many young Walthamstow residents inspired by his achievements too.

“I know we'll all be cheering Lutalo on at the World Championships next year and at Tokyo 2020 and after the Night Feast party I'm expecting to see several other Walthamstow residents joining him."

It was also attended by Cllr Claire Coghill.

Ms Creasy added: “Thank you to the fantastic Friday Night Feast team and Cllr Coghill for helping us make this happen and giving this Walthamstow boy the world beating homecoming he deserved.”
