POLICE have managed to talk down a man from jumping off a footbridge onto a busy motorway below.

The incident closed off the A406 in both directions after 8pm on Tuesday (August 30) between the Crooked Billet roundabout, in Chingford, and the Waterworks Corner roundabout, in Woodford.

Road closures caused severe traffic throughout the night while police officers negotiated with the would-be jumper.

It took nearly five hours but the man was finally talked down from the footbridge just after 12.30am, and provided with medical care.

Officers from the London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade attended the scene with road closures lifted after 1am.
