MOMENTUM members have dismissed claims they are trying to boot out Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy.

The Labour representative is facing increase pressure from the left-wing group after she supported the no-confidence vote in party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

But Momentum organiser Chris Ford quashed the rumours, saying they are part of a "conspiracy".

He said: "The rumours are from the Tory press trying to discredit Momentum.

“They never produce a shred of evidence. It is conspiratorial nonsense.

“But I am disappointed in Stella for supporting the no confidence vote in Jeremy.”

Waltham Forest Momentum member Canon Steven Saxby said he does not know any party members who want to see Ms Creasy go.

He said: “These claims have been made before and I have not heard anyone in the local party say they’d like to boot Stella Creasy out.

“That is not what we are about.”

Shadow Chancellor John McDonell spoke about the current situation in the party at a Waltham Forest Momentum event.

The Keep Corbyn rally took place at St Barnabas, Foster Hall in Wellesley Street, Walthamstow on Friday September 2.

Mr McDonnell said a coup against Jeremy Corbyn started on the leader’s first day.

He said: “What we are witnessing, as you know, is a very very British coup.

“It stated on the very day Jeremy was elected leader of the Labour Party.”

He went on speak about the idea that party members should have a say in appointing shadow cabinet members.

Mr Ford said he would like to see Labour MPs give more say to party members.

He said: “I don’t think it should be restricted to a few in parliament and MPs need to get their heads down and respect the membership.

“I don’t agree with it being restricted to the Westminster village.”

It comes after 1,000 Labour Party members from Waltham Forest were excluded from voting in the upcoming election.

Mr Ford said: “It is disgusting what is happening and I am very concerned at what we are seeing.

“There is an attempt to rig the election against Jeremy and this is extremely questionable for a democratic socialist party.

“One person who has been a member of the Labour party since January suspended for five years because they used to be a member of the Green Party.”

Labour party members will vote in the leadership election between current leader Jeremy Corbyn and MP Owen Smith later this month.

The deadline for ballot papers to be returned is September 21 and the result is expected to be announced on September 24.
