For the price of an average home being sold in Epping Forest, you could buy a seven-bedroom Scottish mansion, a 14-room rural French villa - or even a flight into space for you and a partner with change left over.

Using figures from property website Rightmove, the average selling price for properties in 10 areas around the district was £482,797 in the last year.

We took a look at what that could buy with that money, and what you could afford if you left a more expensive area such as Theydon Bois.

A seven-bedroom detached house in Stanley, Scotland: £476,000

This recently refurbished family home has high ceilings, generous grounds and a detached double garage – but it is still cheaper than most properties being sold in Loughton, where the average price in the last year was £489,563. Despite the size, it has been on the market for nearly two years.

A five-bedroom detached house in Totnes, Devon: £480,000

Still under the Epping Forest average, this detached “executive” house is sandwiched between the south coast and the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park. With views across the rolling countryside, it also has potential for a B&B conversion.

A nine-bedroom villa in Villereal, France: £486, 526

Fancy a fresh start on the continent? At this huge property in the French countryside, you could afford to bring your family and friends along as well. Surrounded by a hectare of garden, it also comes with two guest houses, each with a private pool.

A two-bedroom houseboat moored in Chiswick, London: £575,000

Want to leave land behind altogether and start a new life on the water? This 82ft Dutch barge may be above the Epping Forest average but is close to common prices in Chigwell, where most homes sold for about £552,460 in the last year.

Two flights with Virgin Galactic: £377,582

If it is not just Epping Forest you want to leave but Earth itself, then you and a partner could become members of the “Future Astronaut” community for $250,000 dollars each. Virgin promises a “life changing experience” as you experience weightlessness on the edge of space. And once you return to Earth, you will still have more than £100,000 to find a new place.
