Nursery children wore gold crowns, painted in gold and dressed up as they helped raise awareness of childhood cancer last week.

The children at Bright Horizons Nursery in Epping took part in the event on Wednesday (September 14) as part of an ambitious campaign from an Epping mother.

Lisa Griffiths, 41, of Stonards Hill, is leading the Glow Gold September campaign, which saw buildings including Chelmsford Cathedral, Leeds Castle in Kent and the National Theatre light up in gold.

Her three-year-old son Hugo, who goes to Bright Horizons, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in July last year and has undergone intensive chemotherapy and drug programmes.

Ms Griffiths hopes the campaign will draw attention to cancer’s impact on children, and it has also raised over £600 for the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.

She said: “I was quite overwhelmed by the support we have had from the nursery, ever since Hugo’s diagnosis they have been very helpful.

“It was quite emotional going in that morning and seeing all the children in yellow and all the activities going on.

“I am really pleased the campaign is helping raise awareness and spread the word.”
