A TEENAGER will appear in court today charged with murdering a man and attempting to murder his father.

Tommy Roome, 19, will face his first court hearing at Barkingside Magistrate’s Court today (Friday, September 23) after he was charged with murdering 27-year-old Ricky Hayden and attempting to murder his father.

At around 1.25am on September 13, the Hayden family were woken up by a noise outside their house in Gibbfield Close, Chadwell Heath.

Mr Hayden and his father rushed outside to see a group of around four men they believed to be trying to steal a moped.

Both men were stabbed and rushed to an east London hospital, where Ricky was pronounced dead in the early hours of September 14.

Ricky’s father has now been released from hospital.

Mr Roome, of Rams Grove, Romford, was arrested on suspicion of murder on September 20 and has been kept in custody ahead of today's hearing.

A 19-year-old and 16-year-old were also arrested on suspicion of murder on September 14. The 19-year-old is due to report to police at the end of the month and the 16-year-old was released without charge.

Officers are still looking to trace the moped they believe was used by the suspects.

It is silver and grey, with a large dark coloured box on the rear.

DCI Andrew Packer of the Met Police’s Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "I am asking the public for their help to find this moped as it is crucial to the investigation. It is possible that it has been abandoned or hidden by the suspects.

“I would ask anyone who has an outbuilding or a lock-up that they don't frequently use to check whether the moped has been put there.

"There are a number of open spaces and footpaths within the Marks Gate area and I would urge people with local knowledge of the vicinity to keep an eye out for a moped matching the description."

Any witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist the investigation is asked to call the incident room on 020 8345 3865. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or visit crimestoppers-uk.org.
