A Walthamstow brewery has seen one of its beers crowned London’s top tipple at an award ceremony recongising the capital's best producers.

Wild Card Brewery’s Queen of Diamonds IPA scooped the “Beautiful Brew” prize at the Urban Food Awards, held at Borough Market on Wednesday (September 21).

More than 3,000 Londoners nominated their favourite producers for the awards, where prizes were handed out in 11 categories.

Wild Card director, William Harris, said: “We are really proud, it is great to be recognised.

“From my point of view, the Urban Food Awards are special as they recognise companies that are sustainable and try to source their ingredients from within London.

“It is something that is important for us, we have just finished brewing a green hop ale, where all the hops have been sourced from the marshes and people’s allotments.”

Winners were chosen by a panel of judges, including London-based chefs Tom Hunt, Rowley Leigh and Oliver Rowe and food writer Olia Hercules.

Wild Card’s winning Queen of Diamonds brew was the first beer produced at the firm’s brewery, in Shernhall Street.

It is characterised by its strong, tropical flavours and the brewery recommends it is paired with grilled or spicy foods.

Wild Card founders Mr Harris and Andrew Birkby began making beer as a hobby, before opening their Walthamstow brewery in January 2014.

The firm now supplies beers to celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants, as well as the Oblix restaurant at The Shard in Southwark.

Head brewer, Jaega Wise, said: “We have been brewing the Queen of Diamonds IPA for about three years now.

“It is a recipe I had been working on for a long while, it has been tweaked and tweaked so it is really nice to win an award.

“I remember when we were knocking on people’s doors, begging them to try our beers and now we are winning awards”.
