A SCHOOL hoping to generate its own power with an ambitious solar panel project is one step closer after being nominated for an eco-award.

Mission Grove Primary School, in Buxton Road, Walthamstow, is hoping to win the £12,000 cash prize given to the winner of Mark and Spencer’s Community Energy Award.

The school is up against five other projects in London vying for the prize, and they are currently sitting in fourth place with 262 votes.

Deputy head teacher, Gemma Kent, is hoping to install the solar panels to help teach children about renewable energy and reduce the amount of fossil fuels used to power the school.

She added: “At Mission Grove we have two active eco-councils who are looking are always looking for ways to make our school more sustainable.”

The school is crowdfunding the project while the competition with £150 raised so far.
