Significant Seams in Wood Street, Walthamstow, started the #WeAreWoodStreet campaign which involves volunteers making pillows with positive messages and hanging them around the neighbourhood.

Last week specialist police forces started patrolling the area after random shots were fired at cars.

Project coordinator Catherine West, who lives in Chapel End, Walthamstow, said the aim is to focus people’s attention on the positive side of the community.

The 39-year-old said: “Sadly, the neighbourhood has a bit of a reputation going back over a decade and we don’t want to focus on the negative news.

“It can cast a shadow over the neighbourhood but violence and negative actions can happen anywhere.

“We want to create a positive atmosphere and we do not want to be lumped in with a small handful of people. It is one person versus the silent majority.

“We are asking people to not be intimidated and to show their support by coming out and shopping in Wood Street.”

Colvins DIY in Wood Street, which is one of the street’s oldest stores, opened in 1949.

Manager Joanne Derry, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 27 years, said there have been peaks of violence throughout the decades.

She said: “It happens and then it dies down but thankfully it has not had an effect on our business.

“Most of the trouble happens late at night.

“I would say don’t let that stop you from going out during the day.

“I am in the shop every day and I feel safe.”
