STRANGELY dressed soldiers armed to the teeth with swords and shields were stopped in their tracks by some vigilant police officers.

Police officers stopped several men yesterday (October 6) marching in tunics, in Chingford, who later turned out to be re-enactors from English Heritage.

The historical bunch were recreating King Harold and his army’s famously hurried march south from the battle of Stamford Bridge, in Yorkshire, to taste defeat at the hands of the Normans in Hastings in 1066.

To mark the 950th anniversary of the battle of Hastings, English Heritage sent them out to arrive at Waltham Abbey, where King Harold is said to have prayed at the Holy Cross of Waltham.

The Rector of Waltham Abbey, the Reverend Peter Smith, greeted the marchers at the Abbey Gateway, before a ceremony recreated the doomed King’s prayer.

King Harold Day will be marked in Waltham Abbey on Saturday.
