WOMEN are turning down lifesaving screening and putting their health at risk in the process, a doctor has warned.

Only 63% (65,575) of women aged 25 to 49 who live in Waltham Forest are keeping their cervical screening appointments.

Dr Mayank Shah, who is the Clinical Director for Cancer at the Waltham Forest Clinical Commissioning Group, encouraged women to share their reasons for missing their appointments.

He said: “We are particularly now looking to hear from women in Leyton, Leytonstone and Chingford.

“Improving screening coverage and awareness of the programme is vital in reducing the number of deaths from cervical cancer.

“Screening remains one of the best ways to spot cervical cancer early, and prevent it from developing.

“We want to find out why women are not taking the opportunity to have what can be life-saving screening, and do what we can to reduce the barriers.

“If you know someone who would like to respond but cannot do because of language barriers, please contact the communications team at the email address below.”

The CCG is gathering views on an online questionnaire until October 31.

The CCG is also looking for women to take part in a confidential discussion to find out how to encourage women to get smear tests.
