Young homeless people were given the chance to try some new sporting activities as part of a specially-organised event.
Around 30 young adults, who all live at the YMCA hostel for the homeless in Forest Road, Walthamstow, enjoyed a day out at Lee Valley White Water Centre.
The group tried white water rafting, Hot Dog sessions in two person inflatable kayaks on the rapids, and “Hydrospeeding”, a sport similar to bodyboarding, but on fast flowing white water.
Rita Glynn, fundraising manager for YMCA East London, said: “All the groups who tried the activities at Lee Valley White Water Centre had a wonderful time and said how nice it was to get out with friends and try new challenges.
“With winter drawing in and the added challenges it brings for homeless people, it was a good opportunity for them to experience some fun sporting activities.”
“Combating youth homelessness is not just about providing somewhere to live, it is also about helping them in other ways, and sporting activities such as these help to increase their confidence and life skills.”
