A letter from MP Iain Duncan Smith, which claimed Chingford’s Mini Holland scheme will no longer go ahead, has been disputed.

Mr Duncan Smith wrote to Gordon Wilkinson, secretary of Dale View Resident’s Association, last week, to tell the campaigner plans for the controversial cycle scheme have been thrown out.

But Waltham Forest Council told the Guardian Series this is incorrect and the Chingford and Woodford Green MP was wrong to send it out.

The letter, signed by the MP himself and dated October 12, said: “I recognise your concerns on this matter and I have long campaigned against the proposed transport measures.

“I met with the chief executive of Waltham Forest [council] last week and I am pleased to confirm that the Mini-Holland scheme will not be going ahead in Chingford as a result of the strength of feeling in the local community in opposition to it.

“I have nonetheless passed your letter onto the council so that they are fully aware of all local views on the matter”.

The authority said no decision had been made on the scheme and results of a consultation on plans to close Endlebury Road to traffic were still being analysed.

Campaigner Gordon Wilkinson received a letter from IDS this week

Feedback from residents on the proposed scheme, published last month, was largely negative.

A total of 2,326 negative reactions were lodged, compared to only 614 positive responses.

A council spokesman said: “We are still at the point of analysing the consultation results and no final decision has been taken.

“We will be letting people who responded to the consultation know in due course what the results were.

“As far as we are concerned, at this stage, no decision has been taken.”
