A weekly food festival in a town square that has applied for a licence to serve alcohol has been met with opposition.

Night Feast, which opened on Friday, August 5 in Walthamstow Town Square, hosted a homecoming party for Olympic medallist Lutalo Muhammad.

In a letter of objection, Ms Weitzel of Rectory Road in Walthamstow, said the sale of alcohol at the market would create a problem of anti-social behaviour.

She said: “I have been to several open-air opera/ballet screenings where the council had employed attendants.

“The drunks arrived and sat in the front row of seats shouting and yelling and throwing their cans at the audience nearby.

“We asked the stewards to do something.

“They said we can’t do anything.

“If I was bringing children along to an event there I would not want to encounter that sort of behaviour.”

The night market which runs during the summer months features a range of food stalls, arts and crafts and live entertainment and is promoted as a family event.

The market, which operated with a temporary alcohol licence last summer, is seeking to obtain a permanent licence.

Chris Evans, one of the organisers of Night Feast, said there were no incidents at the market last summer and people drank responsibly.

He said: “We held the night market for eight weeks this summer and we sold alcohol and there were no incidents.

“We work with the police and the people were drinking responsibly.

“We received positive feedback from members of the community and we really want this to continue.”

A decision on whether to grant the application will be made at a meeting of Waltham Forest Council Licensing Sub-Committee at 11am tomorrow, Friday, October 21.
