Police are appealing for witnesses to an attack in Leytonstone this morning, which left one man dead.

A 52-year-old man was found in the High Road in the early hours of the morning (Friday, October 21), close to the junction with Lancaster Road, reportedly suffering from a serious head injury.

He was taken to an east London hospital, where he underwent an emergency operation, but was pronounced dead at around 9.30am.

Police were later called to the hospital at around 6.15am, after being alerted to the situation by London Ambulance Service medics.

Officers investigating the case believe the man may have sustained his injuries during an assault.

The death is being treated as unexplained pending the outcome of a post-mortem examination, which is yet to take place.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Detective Inspector Brittany Clarke said: "At this early stage we are working to establish the events which led to this man being found injured in the street.

"While there is no concrete evidence that the deceased was assaulted at this time, we cannot rule out any possible lines of enquiry.”
