An alcohol licence has been granted to a weekly food festival despite concerns it would encourage anti-social behaviour in a town square.

Night Feast, which runs on Friday evenings during the summer months in Walthamstow Town Square, will have four marshals patrolling the market as part of the licence.

But in a letter of objection Felicity Weitzel, of Rectory Road in Walthamstow, raised concerns about the implications of alcohol being served in the public place.

She said: “I have been to several open-air opera/ballet screenings where the council had employed attendants.

“The drunks arrived and sat in the front row of seats shouting and yelling and throwing their cans at the audience nearby.

“We asked the stewards to do something.

“They said we can’t do anything.

“If I was bringing children along to an event there I would not want to encounter that sort of behaviour.”

Last summer the night market, which features food stalls and live entertainment, operated under a temporary alcohol licence.

Night Feast previously hosted a homecoming party for Olympic medallist Lutalo Muhammad.

Next Friday, October 28, Night Feast will host a fancy dress Halloween party in Walthamstow Town Square.

Chris Evans, one of the organisers of Night Feast, said there were no incidents at the market last summer and people drank responsibly.

He said: “We held the night market for eight weeks this summer and we sold alcohol and there were no incidents.

“We work with the police and the people were drinking responsibly.

“We received positive feedback from members of the community and we really want this to continue.”
