Cover band The Aces will be belting out familiar number one hits from across the decades at The Bell Pub, in Forest Road, Walthamstow, this Saturday night.

The band, which was formed in May 2013, is comprised of Craig Zeital on lead vocals and guitar, John Beardsmore on vocals and bass guitar, drummer Roland Rees and guitarist 'Fig' Fagan.

Craig explains why the members, who are all over the age of 50 and two are over 70, all enjoy playing classic tunes from years ago, as it reminds them of a more innocent time…

Have you played the Bell Pub on Forest Road before?

We’ve not performed there as The Aces, however, Roland and Fig, used to be in a beat group called The Crescents many years ago and actually played at the same pub in 1964, so it will be like a homecoming for them and must surely the longest re-booking length of time in history. Some of the numbers the Crescents played back then are still in the Aces set list today, which must say something about the quality of some 60s hits.

What can the audience expect from your show?

We will be performing a mix of classic covers from the 1950s to the present day that are specifically all number one songs. Some of the songs from our set list include, Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus, Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison, Bye Bye Baby by the Four Seasons, Keep On Running by The Spencer Davis Group and You Really Got Me by The Kinks.

It should be a great night on Saturday with plenty of “danceable” stuff, particularly in the second set, and for lovers of instrumentals, there's a few of them thrown in as well, which is something rarely heard in pub bands these days.

What are your favourite songs to perform?

It is always impossible to say really, as each band member has their own favourites. If I had to pick some of the songs we play, I’d say Roland likes Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love, which is new to our set, John likes Chris Farlowe’s Out Of Time, Fig likes The Shadows’ Wonderful Land, Thinking out Loud by Ed Sheeran, Shakin' all Over by Johnny Kidd And The Pirates and my personal favourites are Mama Mia by Abba and Sugar Sugar by The Archies.

What music did you all listen to growing up that may have inspired your style of performing now?

Roland and Fig grew up with rock’n’roll music from the 1960s, particularly Hank Marvin and John and myself were children of the 1970s and 80s, so it was more punk.

How did you all get into the music industry?

All of our passions for performing began when we were children and started playing our chosen instruments. However we got into the music industry presumably due to an ability to play, sing and perform. Plus, we all have a love of music and so this definitely inspired our career paths.

Were you all friends before you got together or did you meet in the band?

Roland and Fig have been friends since primary school, so for more than 60 years, but they met John and myself after they began auditioning for more band members.

We all get on well, as we all have good memories of the 1960s, which was definitely a more innocent time.

Have you got any other shows around London coming up?

We will not be playing anymore shows in the capital until next year, after we’ve had a two month Christmas break.
