A rally will be held to help strengthen a movement against racism and to mark Islamophobia Awareness Month.

The event is organised by campaign group Waltham Forest Stand Up To Racism and will have Polish activist Jacek Szymanski speaking.

In a statement Mr Szymanski said: “Immigrants, Muslims and other minorities are under attack.

“We need solidarity between communities to stop this.

“That’s why I joined Stand Up To Racism.”

Other speakers at the event include Jeanette Arnold who is Labour Assembly Member for North East London, Irfan Akhtar from Waltham Forest Council of Mosques, and David Rosenberg from Jewish Socialist Group Cable Street 80.

Mr Akhtar said: ‘‘The wake-up call delivered by Brexit and Trump should dispel any notions that racism is

on the decline. We need to regroup and unite against this threat and fight for a society that benefits all.”

Mr Rosenberg said: ‘‘Just a few weeks ago we celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street.

“But now we have to battle once more those trying to revive the hate of the 1930s against targets both old and new.”

Sophie Bolt, one of the organisers of the event, said: “It is vital that we come together against this shocking rise in racism.

“Government policies have created NHS shortages, the housing crisis, unemployment and low pay - not immigrants.

“By challenging the lies and uniting together we can end this toxic climate of hatred and intolerance.”

In a statement Waltham Forest Stand Up To Racism said: “Here in Waltham Forest we have a proud history of uniting together against racism and fascism and celebrating our diverse community.

“We need to put pressure on this government to meet its obligations to give sanctuary to refugees, to stop scapegoating migrants and end the toxic ‘Prevent’ strategy which targets Muslims and threatens all our human rights and freedoms.”

The event will take place at Harmony Hall in Truro Road, Walthamstow, at 2pm on Saturday, November 19.
