A FATHER is "disgusted" because he has to walk past mounds of food waste on his commute to work every morning.

Kevin Jones, who lives near Grove Green Road in Leyton, said fly-tippers dump furniture and kitchen appliances but the biggest problem is food waste, which attracts rats.

The 45-year-old believes because some residents do not have space for wheelie bins outside their homes they are forced to dump their waste on the street.

He said: “The problem is lots of flats do not have the facilities to dispose of their rubbish because wheelie bins would obstruct the footpaths.

“The biggest problem is household rubbish like pizza boxes, vegetable peelings and food.

“Foxes and rats tear the bags open at night and in the morning when I walk to work there’s rubbish all over the place and one morning there was a pizza on my doorstep that had been dragged there by an animals.

“It is a health risk and as a father of a five-year-old daughter I feel disgusted and I don’t want her growing up in an area full of rubbish.

“As soon as the council clean it up there are more bags dumped within an hour.”

Mr Jones, who works as a teacher, has lived in a street off of Grove Green Road for 13 years and says the problem with fly-tipping has gotten worse in recent years.

He said although Waltham Forest Council clean up the rubbish in the surrounding streets every morning, it does nothing to deter fly-tippers and he wants to see CCTV installed.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment said: “We are aware that fly-tipping has been taking place on Grove Green Road and as part of our ongoing efforts to crack down on enviro-crime and enviro-criminals we are installing new CCTV cameras to monitor the situation and track down those responsible.

“We are also carrying out additional patrols in the area and will be speaking to local landlords to remind them of their responsibilities to ensure that their tenants are disposing of all waste correctly.

“We have new powers to issue £400 Fixed Penalty Notices to anyone we catch fly-tipping, which we lobbied government for and are now leading the way on with well over 100 fines issued since this became available to us.

“We have also started carrying out early morning patrols to clear any fly-tips in hotspot areas as quickly as possible, and again take action to track down and punish those responsible.”
