The 54-year-old was well known for his appearances in James Bond films like Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is not Enough, as well as Hollywood classic Saving Private Ryan.

Mr Truglia held the world record for the fastest 100m abseil and often took part in daredevil challenges for charity.

Tributes flooded in on social media after news of his death.

His friend and ex-army colleague Phil Tunniclife wrote on Facebook: “'I can't believe you are gone mate, a part of me just died.

“You were my best friend and brother for 36 years. It hasn't sunk in that I'll never see you again.

“One thing is certain I'll treasure the memories and never forget you.”

Another friend Colin Sweetman posted on Twitter: “After 35 years of friendship and so many shared adventures, I’ll miss you my dear old mate.”

There have been reports Mr Truglia and a friend were due to abseil out of the helicopter at the same time, despite concerns it could not hold their weight.

Further details of why the abseil went wrong have not been released, but a spokesman for the Foreign Office confirmed the stuntman’s death.

They said: “We have offered assistance to the family of a British national who has sadly died in Chongqing, China. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
