AN ARTIST has created embroidered photos of refugees to raise money for a women’s refuge centre.

Giovanna Del Sarto, who lives in Leytonstone, travelled to Serbia and Greece to document the migrant crisis and decided to bring the photos to life with coloured thread.

The documentary photographer captured images of migrants as they landed on the shores of Europe.

The 46-year-old said: “At Christmas we need to remember there are still people in refugee camps all over Europe and they are stuck there.

“The photos are all of women and I have made them 3D.

“The humanity of the refugee should already come through in the photos but the embroidery is my gift to people to people.

“It brings the photo to life and it is a limited edition piece of art.”

The Athena Centre for Women in the Greek island of Chios is run by the charity Action for Switzerland and provides aid to female refugees.

The embroidered photos have been made into postcards and are £25 each, plus postage, with £20 going to the charity.

Mrs Del Sarto, who is originally from Northern Italy and has lived in Leytonstone for eight years, started the project A Polaroid for a Refugee after working with refugees in Greece last summer.
