Waltham Forest will play its part in a worldwide campaign to bring an end to violence against women and girls tomorrow.

Events have been organised locally to raise awareness, support victims and encourage people to stand up against abuse as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign.

This includes domestic violence, hate crime, sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation, female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage and honour-based violence.

Since 2014, the borough has held White Ribbon status, which recognises the work by Waltham Forest council and other local groups to tackle violence against women.

Several events will be staged across the 16-day programme, including an information session at Whipps Cross Hospital and a community safety day hosted by FGM campaigner Hibo Wardere.

Leyton Orient already showed its support for the campaign during a home game on November 19, when first team players wore White Ribbon t-shirts prior to kick-off.

The White Ribbon logo will also be promoted by the London Fire Brigade at station houses across the borough.

Cllr Liaquat Ali, cabinet member for community safety, said: “We are very clear that abuse in any form cannot and will not be condoned in Waltham Forest.

“We are committed to working with the police, Leyton Orient FC, fire brigade and other local partners to take action against perpetrators and protect those at risk of harm.”
