An 18-year-old man who won a youth award says he hopes to “break down the stereotype that black people are up to no good”.
Luke Doyley, of Markhouse Road, Walthamstow, won a national Black Youth Achievement Award for performing arts.
Mr Doyley graduated from Big Creative Academy in Blackhorse Lane with a certificate in performing arts last year.
He is doing a year-long internship at Emmanuel Community Church in Erskine Road, Walthamstow and hopes to inspire other young people with his award.
He said: “I want to break down the stereotype that black people are up to no good and also young people in general.
“I want to show that we can contribute something positive and I want to empower other young people to do the same.
“I was overwhelmed when I was told about the award and I am very grateful.”
Mr Doyley is among three youths from Waltham Forest to be awarded at a ceremony in Rainham on Saturday, November 26.
Aaron Plummer, 16, and Simone Darling, 23, also received awards at the sixth annual awards ceremony.
