TRIBUTES have poured in for a former MP for Wanstead and Woodford who died age 90 this week.

Lord Patrick Jenkin of Roding died peacefully at his home in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk on Tuesday (December 20), his family confirmed.

Lord Jenkin became Wanstead and Woodford’s MP immediately after wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1964.

He held the post until 1987, when he became a Conservative Life Peer in the House of Lords.

Redbridge politicians past and present have paid tribute to him, including some who knew him personally.

Ex-Conservative MP for Ilford North Lee Scott said he was “saddened” by the news of his death.

He said: “When I was starting out in my own political career in the area Patrick was able to offer me some very helpful words of advice on the trials and tribulations of politics.

“We shall never forget this renowned gentleman for his honesty and integrity. He will be missed.”

Mr Scott added his condolences to the late Peer’s family and friends.

His successor, Labour’s Wes Streeting, took to Twitter to pay tribute to Lord Jenkin.

Former Liberal Democrat councillor for Church End ward Richard Hoskins also gave a heartfelt tribute.

Mr Hoskins met Lord Jenkin in the 1960s, when they both stood as candidates in the Hornsey Council elections.

They came head to head again in 1970 when Mr Hoskins tried and failed to contest his Wanstead and Woodford Parliamentary seat.

He said: “Patrick combined his Parliamentary career with being a good constituency MP. Involved in local causes across the board, he knew and remembered the names of so many of his constituents, Something he continued to foster long after he retired as the local MP.

“I still value the many off the record chats, often sitting in his car in one part of the constituency or another.

“Few politicians now are in his mould.”

MP for Chingford and Woodford Green Iain Duncan Smith said: " After he stood down as Wanstead and Woodford MP and the boundaries changed, part of his old constituency came into mine, and I was struck by the number of people who remembered him fondly and who all thought that he had done an excellent job as their local MP.

"As the father of a good friend of mine, Bernard Jenkin, I got to know him well and always found his advice helpful.

"Lord Jenkin was an excellent example of what public service is really all about and he epitomised the definition of a true servant of his country – he will be sorely missed."

Leader of the Redbridge Conservatives Cllr Paul Canal retweeted Lord Jenkin’s grandson Rob, who said he was “very proud of such a thoughtful, progressive, and extraordinary public servant”.
