Neighbours say they cannot walk down their “vile” street because of the continuous stench from halal meat factories.

They say workers wake them at 5am with deliveries and leave meat in open bins which is torn apart by birds and foxes.

Sutherland Road in Walthamstow is home to Banitas Ltd, M Coban Ltd and Kazon Meat Ltd.

Ruth Hardwick says on some mornings she is greeted by a bag of blood when she opens her front door.

The 27-year-old teacher said: “We find bones in our car park that seagulls drop and also plastic bags outside the front door full of blood and meat residue.

“It is disgusting and I find it depressing.

“The smell is really horrible and in the summer we have to keep our windows shut because of the stench.

“I just want to see our street cleaned up and if the factories closed it would definitely help the situation.”

Lena Weber-Reed has lived on the road for over a year and said her daughter Romy, aged two, has not slept properly since they moved in.

The 36-year-old mother-of-one said: “The men start working at 5am and they are so noisy with their vans and forklifts beeping.

“My child is woken up and comes into our room every morning complaining about the noise.

"As a parent it is frustrating.

“It is impossible to park on the road with up to 10 vans and I have to take the buggy on the road because they are parked on the pavements and this is not safe.

“It is not the type of place I imagined to raise a child.”

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “Every day we are greeted by a barrage of white vans with men hauling raw meat in shopping trolleys, sometimes not in a plastic bag.

“The rubbish that these businesses produce is left scattered about and there are open waste bins overflowing with meat.

“It is infuriating and I have had enough.

“I have lived here for one and a half years and it is so bad I want to leave because it is just vile.

“It is unbearable that you cannot walk down your own street because of the smell.”

But Aydin Kanik, manager of Banitas Ltd, says he has no choice but to leave waste meat bins outside for collection.

The 24-year-old who is originally from Turkey and now lives in Hastings said: “I have no choice but to leave the bins out at 5pm for collection at 11pm because I finish work.

“Sometimes during rush hour we leave the meat outside when we unload it just to make things quicker for the delivery, but it is always in boxes and we bring it inside when the van is gone.

“We are inspected every year by the Food Safety Authority and although there are some problems with cleanliness it is nothing big.”

Matti Coban, 37, owner of M Coban Ltd, said: “I know the neighbours complain about the noise, but I have to start work early in the morning because this is my business.

“We always have a lid on the bins and the meat is not left uncovered out in the open.”

Yusuy Tarclack who works at Kazon Meat Ltd said: “If there is meat on the outside of the waste bins it is only small bits that the birds are getting at.

“We will be more careful now.

“But our meat comes in boxes and is covered so the birds cannot get at the meat when it is delivered.”
