AN ILFORD artist will receive a medal after being recognised by the US Department of State.

Rachel Whiteread, who was the first woman to win the annual Turner Prize in 1993, will be presented with the U.S. Department of State International Medal of Arts, at the Harry S. Truman building next to The White House, on January 12.

The 53-years-old is known for making solid casts of ordinary objects, such as tables, chairs and even entire rooms, and says the objects carry “the residue of years and years of abuse”.

Along with other contemporary artists including Nick Cave, Jenny Holzer and Wolf Khan, Ms Whiteread was chosen for demonstrating a commitment to the Art in Embassies mission of bringing different countries together through creative forms.

Art in Embassies was created by the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, in 1953 and over the past half century, has engaged with 189 countries all over the world.
