A MAN has been convicted of the manslaughter of his former friend whom he thought was having an affair with his ex-wife.

Huseyin Akkoyun was found guilty of the manslaughter of 49-year-old Mehmet Degerli in Sandringham Road, Hackney.

The 47-year-old of Homerton High Street, Lower Clapton, appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday January 12.

The court heard how on Tuesday June 7 2016 Degerli had gone to meet a female friend at approximately 10.30pm in the Cecelia Road area of Hackney.

Around two hours later the pair returned and the woman noticed her ex-husband - Akkoyun - hanging around Mehmet's car and suspected he had seen the pair together.

After dropping Mehmet off in a road nearby she drove past Mehmet’s car again to see if Akkoyun was still there before giving Mehmet the all clear.

Mehmet returned to his car in Sandringham Road at approximately 12.30am but was met by Akkoyun, who then violently assaulted him.

Emergency services were alerted after a member of the public saw Mehmet lying unresponsive in a car park with severe facial injuries.

Police officers and London Ambulance Service attended but Mehmet was pronounced dead at the scene.

He suffered injuries consistent with an assault.

Akkoyun was arrested in Hackney on Wednesday June 8 after officers pulled over his car. His hands were severely bruised and swollen. He was charged on Friday June 10 2016.

Akkoyun's nephew Mustafa Alparslan, 21, of Remington Road, Haringay, was found not guilty during the same trial.

Akkoyun will be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court today, Friday January 13.
