A quick-thinking officer and police medic helped save the life of a man who collapsed in a coffee shop with a suspected heart attack.

Newham sergeant Sally Longhurst was working in Westminster on Sunday (January 15) when she took a coffee break at around 2pm in Caffe Nero in Lancaster Place.

Soon after, a man in his 40s was taken ill as he waited to be served.

As the man worsened, PS Longhurst began treating him, performing CPR while medics were called.

At the same time a member of the public issued an alert using the smartphone app GoodSAM Responder and a medic in the area responded to the call for assistance.

The app allows people to dial the emergency services and at the same time alert the situation to nearby medically qualified responders.

The responding medic, from Waltham Forest, worked in rotation with PS Longhurst to continue chest compressions on the unresponsive man, while LAS medics arrived.

After half an hour, the man regained consciousness and was taken to a south London hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Chief inspector Stephen Manger said: "The LAS team and responders were impressed with the initial response of the police officers and medic and their continued assistance throughout the treatment.

"They stated that, due to their early actions, a life had been saved."
