A SHOPKEEPER who sold illicit cigarettes and medication to treat erectile dysfunction may lose his licence.

The non-duty cigarettes and medication were seized by Waltham Forest Trading Standards in Asya Food Centre in St James’ Street in Walthamstow in 2015.

Waltham Forest Trading Standards have now applied for a review of the licence due to the “serious nature of the crimes committed”.

Sniffer dogs uncovered 2,440 illegal cigarettes and two kilos of hand rolling tobacco under a stairwell and behind the counter of the shop on September 3 2015.

Employee Mr Ali Raza Tulu told officers the cigarettes were for his personal use but admitted he also sold them to customers.

Mr Uygar Altun, the owner of the shop, was not on duty at the time of the raid.

On September 23 2015 officers visited again and found prescribed medication to treat erectile dysfunction stashed behind the counter.

The VAT and duty evaded from the seized goods was calculated as £783 for the cigarettes and £488 for the HRT.

The seizures were the results of joint operations between Waltham Forest Trading Standards and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

In a report published by the council, Trading Standards said: “The review application seeks the revocation of the premises licence due to the serious nature of the crimes committed.”

Waltham Forest Council Licensing Sub Committee will make a decision at a meeting on Monday, January 30.
