For a budding artist yet to release an album, Rationale has an emphatic fan base of which I am now proudly part of after seeing him perform at Heaven in Charing Cross last night.

For a small venue it was a big performance and a breath of fresh air to watch a solo male artist quite so unmanufactured, slinking around the stage not because he had been told to move but because he simply had to.

His rhythmic and sultry dancing was in exact time to every beat and stop of music from his perfectly polished band, who were equally as relaxed on stage.

Half way through the final performance of his UK tour Rationale declared “this is pure love”, seemingly overwhelmed by the support of fans from the city who were screaming, dancing and singing along.

Tracks from the baritone, such as Mire, Vessels and last week’s release of Reciprocate, offer a musical mix from ballads to anthems, all echoing synth-pop of the 80’s with an electric sound and powerful voice similar to Tracy Chapman, even dabbling with protest pop in Fuel to the Fire.

Formerly known as Tinashe, taken from his real name Tinashe Fazakerley, he released the album Saved in 2010 with a strong synth-pop sound and a clear Zimbabwean influence, but had little success.

He has certainly found himself in Rationale and, following the release of Fast Lane and Something for Nothing in 2015, the music industry seems to agree with Pharrell Williams, Justin Timberlake and Elton John all singing his praises.
