DAWN raids across the city have seen 12 people arrested in connection with moped-enabled crime.

The raids, some of which took place at addresses in Hackney, Haringey and Enfield, happened this morning (Tuesday, January 31).

The 12 suspects, all men, were arrested on suspicion of various offences, including conspiracy to rob, and are being questioned at police stations.

Fifteen search warrants were executed and over 100 police carried out the raids, which were also in Camden, Islington and Southwark.

Mopeds, which are often stolen, serve as an easy getaway for criminals in congested areas.

The raids were part of the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Vocare which was launched in September 2016 to target suspects involved in robberies where mopeds were used.

Chief Superintendent Simon Laurence, borough commander for Hackney, said: "The use of mopeds, often stolen, in the course of criminal offences is a common tactic used by thieves and organised criminal networks in London and offences range from commercial burglaries to personal robberies. Some of the offences have been violent in nature.”
