A LORRY driver has been arrested after a man was knocked down and killed on his way to pray at a mosque.

Mohammed Yousef, 79, was walking towards Jami Masjid Ghousia, when he was struck down in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, at 12.30pm on Thursday (February 16).

The 44-year-old male driver stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail until a date in May.

The victim has been named locally as Mohammad Yousef, 79, of Boundary Road, Walthamstow.

A spokesman for the mosque said he was a regular and the congregation are "shocked’ at his sudden death".

A post-mortem is due to take place in the coming days.
