A PIZZA chain is planning to sell takeaways until midnight – four years after protestors forced them out of opening up across the street.

Domino’s Pizza threw out plans to open as late as 1.30am at 147 Wanstead High Street in April 2013 after Redbridge Council received over 80 objections from residents.

Despite admitting defeat “for a number of reasons”, a company spokesman said: “We have identified Wanstead as having great potential for pizza and are currently looking at possible sites in the area."

But after the council granted the takeaway chain planning permission to refurb the old Chinese takeaway at 72 High Street in October, it appears to be trying its luck in Wanstead again.

A notice posted on the door of the potential new shop reads: “East London Pizza limited has applied on February 7 for a premises licence at Domino’s Pizza, 72, High Street, Wanstead, to apply for the sale of late night refreshments.

“Opening hours will be Monday to Sunday 8am to 12am, and sale of late night refreshments 11pm to 12am.”

It instructs anyone wishing to oppose the application to write to Redbridge Council before March 7.

In a design and access statement for the premises, Domino’s claims the new outlet will employ 25-30 people “who usually live locally, reducing the need for every individual to bring a vehicle to work”.

It promises minimum traffic at the shop because the vast majority of orders are made for delivery and during off-peak hours – “not adding to local congestion”.

Domino’s also claims “litter is rarely generated in the surrounding areas of its stores” due to the focus on home delivery, but litter checks are still regularly made by staff.

With regards to anti-social behaviour, the statement claims the pizza chain could improve late night safety around the shop and Wanstead Tube Station.

It says: “The openness of the store frontage combined, with Domino’s late opening hours will improve natural surveillance and help in the creation of a safer environment.

“If goods are purchased direct they are unlikely to be consumed in the vicinity of the store due to the high temperature at which they are served, so the risk of troublemaking by lingering customers is minimised.”

In terms of opening hours the chain says it aims to open for the same number of hours across all stores, but has to negotiate these with each local authority.

Rival pizza company Papa John’s is open in Wanstead High Street until 1am Sunday to Thursday and 1.30am Friday and Saturday.

It is not clear when Wanstead Domino's will open its doors.
