A FOSTER parent who has looked after nearly 100 children in nine years has encouraged others to register as carers.

Pauline Cole, 62, of Honey Lane, Waltham Abbey, has helped vulnerable children of all ages in difficult situations as an emergency and long-term carer.

Ms Cole and her partner Peter Filmer, 65, were presented with a supporting educational attainment award by Waltham Forest Council after children in their care excelled in school.

Now the mother-of-three wants to encourage others in the borough to sign up to make a difference to the next generation.

Ms Cole said: “It can be hard work but it is so rewarding seeing the kids excel in education and go on to university.

“I first though about foster caring when my kids were young and still living at home. They had friends round and were really happy and I thought of all the kids who didn’t have that.

“There are so many bad things happening to kids out there it is unbelievable and if I thought about it too much I would be crying all the time.

“I would definitely encourage others to become foster carers because you can change a child’s life. Although there will be challenges there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.”

Ms Cole and Mr Filmer received the prize at Waltham Forest Council’s Foster Carer Awards which took place in January.

Kathleen Hudson was presented with a services to fostering award and Paulette Brown was awarded for her commitment, resilience and patience.

Ms Brown who has been caring for children for four years said she wanted “to give something back to the community”.

Cllr Grace Williams, cabinet member for children and young people, presented the foster carers with the awards.

She said: “It was humbling to hear the different stories and experiences of our fantastic foster carers at the awards ceremony. They have clearly made an immeasurable difference to the lives of so many of our young people.

“They really are an absolute credit to Waltham Forest, and we want them to know just how much we value their commitment and compassion.”
