CHILDREN, parents, and teachers lined the streets as the funeral car of their beloved lollipop man went by.
The funeral of Wanstead lollipop man Derek Jarvis took place at the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium in Aldersbrook last Thursday (February 16).
The 71-year-old died at the end of January after a battle with lung cancer.
On the way to Aldersbrook the funeral procession drove up Wanstead High Street where Wanstead Church School pupils, teachers, parents, and many more were waiting at the crossing where he worked for nearly 10 years.
Headteacher Mark Hemsley said: “Derek’s funeral was a fitting tribute to a wonderful and generous man.
“When the hearse passed by his crossing it was met by a spontaneous and respectful round of applause.
“Although it was a sad occasion saying goodbye, he managed to bring a smile to all our faces with his choice of music, which ended with Always look on the bright side of life.
“A true gentleman who we will all miss.”
Several members of staff from the school went on to the funeral, while others signed a book of condolences.
