A SINGLE mother-of-two says she is fed up with the council housing her in properties that are “not good enough”.

Terri Johanson, 26, of Marlowe Road in Walthamstow, was moved to a “mould infested” flat after living in a property overrun with rats.

Ms Johanson’s twins were born prematurely at 29 weeks in January and they are due to be released from hospital next week.

But she said she cannot bring them into the flat assigned to her by Waltham Forest Council due to the health risks posed by the mould.

She said: “My studio flat has toxic mould all over the kitchen and bathroom and it would risk the babies’ health if I brought them here.

“I know that it is dangerous and they have been through a hard time already.

“I feel really let down by the council and I am really worried for my kids’ health.

“When I was pregnant the council housed me in a rat-infested flat and now this – it is not good enough.

“I just feel totally upset because there’s no way I can bring them back to this house.”

Ms Johanson moved into the flat when she was five months pregnant in October 2016.

She had been living in a property in Sturge Avenue in Walthamstow that was blighted by rats.

The healthcare assistant who no longer speaks to the father of her twins says the stress of the unsuitable home she lived in caused her to go into labour early.

She said: “The stress made me go into labour at 29 weeks and I had to have an emergency C-section.

“I have been battling with the council over this and have gotten letters from a consultant at the hospital and my midwife but everything has been ignored.

“Since I have two kids I am eligible for a two-bedroom flat but I would take a one-bedroom.

“I don’t think it is right to expect my family to put up the money for me to rent privately.”

A spokesman for the council said: “A surveyor is due to visit Ms Johanson tomorrow to assess the condition of the property and agree any action required.

“We have responded to Ms Johanson directly explaining that this visit would be arranged. We are committed to ensuring that all of the properties we use to provide temporary accommodation are maintained to a good standard and will respond to any issues raised by residents.”
